Big Beautiful Bountiful Buoyant Balloons! … err … Bubbles?‏

16 May 2010

Hello my fellow Balloonists!

“Wanna take a ride?”
Contact: Wanna take a ride?

What did you say?
OK to go?
Contact,(c) wormhole travel...
Good movie 🙂
OK to go … right … let’s goooooooooooo…..

First destination is Jupiter:
Jupiter loses one of its stripes
Jupiter has lost one of its iconic red stripes and scientists are baffled as to why. The largest planet in our solar system is usually dominated by two dark bands in its atmosphere, with one in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern hemisphere. However, the most recent images taken by amateur astronomers have revealed the lower stripe known as the Southern Equatorial Belt has disappeared leaving the southern half of the planet looking unusually bare. The band was present in at the end of last year before Jupiter ducked behind the Sun on its orbit. However, when it emerged three months later the belt had disappeared.”

Jupiter was pictured this month (left) looking unusually bare, compared to July 2009 (right)
Well lets wish Jupiter luck and and hope our Big Balloon in the sky gets back its usual balanced grace 🙂
But that “was linked to storm activity that preceded the change” sounds familiar …
… hmmmm

‘The question now is when will the South Equatorial belt erupt back into activity and reappear?’ Mr Wesley said.”. was linked to storm activity that preceded the changeas to what had caused the belt to fade, the most likely explanation was that it it was a mystery “Mr Wesley said while

Musical accompaniment: The 1967 Sunshine Pop song “Up, Up and Away”
Here is the clean cut and bright (Las Vegas?) Nancy Sinatra version
My Beautiful Balloon, sung by Nancy Sinatra
– I love the trampoline work 🙂

… “sunshine pop” …hmmm … how apt for the balloon popping that follows 😉
Maybe with better vocals (sorry Nancy) the 5th Dimension version:
The 5th Dimension - Up, Up and Away
“5th Dimension” … now that is a good scientific name for a pop group!

… with appropriate lyrics as well … ( to set the tone for what follows 🙂
Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon
Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon
We could float among the stars together, you and I
For we can fly we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon
The world’s a nicer place in my beautiful balloon
It wears a nicer face in my beautiful balloon
We can sing a song and sail along the silver sky
For we can fly we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon
Suspended under a twilight canopy
We’ll search the clouds for a star to guide us
If by some chance you find yourself loving me
We’ll find a cloud to hide us
We’ll keep the moon beside us
Love is waiting there in my beautiful balloon
Way up in the air in my beautiful balloon
If you’ll hold my hand we’ll chase your dream across the sky
For we can fly we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon
Up, up, and away…..

Well … you may think that human life is lacking a bit of excitment these days.
What with the end of the and Financial Bubbles …
… and also the collapse of the Swine Flu Scare
Well … fear not!
It looks like another “round of excitement” may be on the way 🙂
You thought we had a few minor inconveniences that needed to be soughted out in the Science world 😉
… you may agree that the Bad Boys of Science ie. Health Science, Climate Science and Green Science …
… need a bit of help to get back to reality …
… you thought the mischief may have disappeared from the human race 😉
…. but fear not …
… our brothers in the political world seem to have put on an extravaganza for the whole globe’s entertainment 😉
As Haddon in the film Contact says:
“First rule in government spending: Why build 1 when you can have 2 at twice the price” 🙂

“A new bubble?” you wisper expectantly.
Another rollercoaster ride ahead! 🙂 … or so it seems.
Overdose - The Next Financial Crisis
Directed by Martin Borgs. With Johan Norberg. In times of crisis people seek strong leaders and simple solutions. But what happens when their solutions are identical to the mistakes that caused the very crisis?
Overdose is the story about the greatest economic crisis of our age – the one that awaits us. This clip discusses the risk of economic meltdown in states like the US, Greece, Italy, Spain and Great Britain.

The FOR argument:
The AGAINST argument:

Financial Fiasco: How America's Infatuation with Home Ownership and Easy Money Created the Economic Crisis

What do you think?
Does critical thinking reign in the halls of power?
Would our fun filled politicians really make these sort of mistakes?
Surely this misguided behaviour has never happened in history before?
I think … maybe:

And maybe another bubble that reason has still to pop:
Blind ideology is dancing on the grave of reason
“Such irrationality, intolerance and, indeed, bigotry run counter to the cardinal tenets of a free society based on reason and the toleration of dissent.”
“Rather than going where the evidence leads, ideology wrenches the evidence to fit a prior idea. Not only is ideology inimical to reason, it sacrifices truth to power as it attacks those who try to uphold reality in the face of dogma.”
I will have to read more of Melanie Phillips.
… ahhh … another book to read during the coming Summer on the Boat 🙂
Cover of 'The World Turned Upside Down: The Global Battle over God, Truth, and Power'
Maybe this explains why we had our recent “international incident”:
Muslims attack swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks at a university may 11th 2010
… even the Aussies are disgusted:
… and as usual our lovable UNT seems to have gotten even these facts wrong  (see at 0.09 seconds) …
… even when international news happens on its own doorstep:
Så det var ingen fysisk kontakt mellan Vilk och åskådarna i publiken?
– Som jag har har fått berättat för mig var det ingen kontakt, säger Eronen.”
What do you think? … I love facts versus feelings debates 🙂

… and finally here is a big beautiful bubble that we humans may not want to escape …
… 5 billion years in the future:
“Glowing like a multi-faceted jewel, the planetary nebula IC 418 lies about 2000 light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Lepus. A planetary nebula represents the final stage in the evolution of a star similar to our Sun. The star at the centre of IC 418 was a red giant a few thousand years ago, but then ejected its outer layers into space to form the nebula, which has now expanded to a diameter of about 0.2 light-years.”
… though we will probably all be watching from ringside seats on a planet around our nearby star Alpha Centauri 🙂
I can’t wait!
Very best regards,
Your Buoyant Balloonist Brady
