Waltzing 2009 Seals ?

28 Dec 2008

Hello there everybody,

I thought you might like to let these two waltzing galaxies escort you into the New Year.

Hubble Interacting Galaxy NGC 5257
Please meet NGC 5257 and NGC 5258 dancing across open space in front of the Virgo constellation 300 million light years away. They each have a supermassive black hole in their central bright cores and have just swung by each other dragging out their spiral arms into a light fingered touch. You can see the burst of star formation in the BLUE arms caused by their passing as well as the dark RED dust lanes from just exploded stars. Marvellous!

But, back to Earth again for some end-of-year humour too.

Have a look below right.

You might be tempted to think…
… “what a wonderful example of Darwinian Evolution in action!”…
But …. you would be mistaken (some would say).A ribbon seal in the Alaskan Arctic (Photo courtesy NOAA)
These cute and cuddly camouflaged critters are now at the centre of a conservational controversy,
… dare I say … a Green activist’s nightmare? .

“Why?”, do I hear you say? Well…

The problem is that…
… the big american National Oceanic and Atmospheres Association (NOAA, pronounced Noah as in Noah’s Ark) …
… has just decided that the Ribbon Seal is NOT endangered…
… as their “computer models” say that the arctic ice will NOT decrease in the future…

Now, the trouble with this is that..
… the Center for Biological Diversity has just finished successfully getting the US government…
… to declare the (populous) Polar Bear listed as endangered because their “computer models” showed that…
… wait for it …
… the arctic ice WILL decrease in the future…
FANTASTIC!

Sometimes you just have to sit back and laugh!

Below are some comments about this Silly Science Situation that are flying around the blogshere just now,

But NOAA says… Ribbon Seals NOT endangered???
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2008/12/23/noaa-determines-ribbon-seals-should-not-be-listed-as-endangered-say-ice-will-continue-to-form/#more-4661

Comments anyone? ……

“But the seals are so cute! Surely we can’t forget about the poor little seals! I mean, our funding could depend on this!”

“Let’s see.
1. Seals use the ice when it’s there.
2. When the ice is gone, seals go do something else.
Sounds like a crisis to me. I’m all for huddling around a dung fire in my mud hut so that the seals can sun themselves.”

“Center for Biological Diversity –
“dude, NOAA, you’re seriously blowing this for us. You were supposed to say that the seal was in danger and people are to blame. Thats what the deal was!…now we have to make a commercial of the earth exploding because CO2 went up 1 ppm.””

“Okay, who’s the joker who painted the seal?… ;)”

“Good, there will be ice and seals for the polar bears in that region.”

“Is Homo Sapiens Sapiens subject to consideration for protection under the Endangered Species Act??”

“Painted? Take a closer look. Who skinned a penguin down South and zipped it onto a seal up North?”

“WHAT Polar Bears? They’re going to be extinct due to all the ice melting. . . . . . Oh, wait . . . . . .
puzzled, scratches head”

“So. There IS enough ice for seals, but NOT enough for polar bears?”

BTW, what do Ribbon Seals taste like?”

“Chicken”

“At least they didn’t paint bulleyes on their sides.”

“I don’t get it. Polar bears are on the endangered list because ice WILL MELT IN THE FUTURE, but seals are not going on the same list because ice WILL NOT MELT IN THE FUTURE. !?!”

“I was under the impression NOAA chose animals… two by two… :)”

“Anyway… those seals look mighty tasty! Usually seal meat is quite fatty, you have to cook them fairly long and drain the fat several times.”

“Maybe NOAA hasn’t heard — the seas are going to boil! That’s what Hansen says, and he’s a scientist. Boiling seas can’t be good for Ribbon Seals.”

“But, on the bright side, if you like seal soup…..”

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

 … so before I go …(for this year  ),

Let us all raise our champagne glasses and toast to these Surviving Seals, Waltzing Galaxies and our Entertaining Earth in 2009!

Skål!
